I worked on the latest Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron for 6 months designing and animating on-set graphics and User Interfaces. I had the chance to work closely one more time with the production designer Charles Wood and Marvel’s art department director Alan Payne. I was responsible to design and animate myself the screens for the Iron Man, Avengers Tower, Quinjet, Leviathan Lab and Strucker sets. And collaborate with other sets the rest of team was working on.
The most challenging and exciting tasks of my career so far. Design and animate all the graphic elements for one of my favourites super-heroes. For the Iron Man designs I opted for a combination of reds and yellows following the colour palette of his latest suit. The main 3D assets were supplied by Marvel but I generated lots of different widgets in 3D as well, and dropped them in 3D After Effects comps where I combined all the render passes to achieve a unique semi-transparent/holographic visual representation of the main assets. For the UI language I created a big library of data widgets which helped me be more reactive when the director wanted to have screen content ready in a short amount of time.
For the Leviathan Lab I created a series of screens featuring parts of the Leviathan creature and Chitauri body sections being analysed by a more human-like tech. The combination of green over blue was good to make those hero 3D assets stand out through the lens, a very interesting set of screens when having them all together on the set.
The cockpit of the Quinjet was one of my other tasks on this project. I started with some futuristic designs featuring 3D widgets, holographic representations of the avionics data and 3D schematics for the terrains. But Joss wanted the systems to feel more human/functional, so I finally designed a more realistic series of little screens and tablets to fit the cockpit production design beautifully crafted.
This is only the work I did. To see all the screen designs produced by the entire team please visit the Territory Studio website.
